Nairobi County Secretary Leboo ole Morintat was on Wednesday, January 22, arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) as part of investigations into corruption at City Hall.

The evening raid saw detectives cart away phones, computers and other items considered pertinent to the investigation.

According to a report by Citizen, Morintat was taken to EACC’s Integrity Centre headquarters to record a statement.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is currently facing charges of corruption having been accused of misappropriating Ksh357 million.

He was released on a Ksh15 million cash bail.

The news of Morintat’s arrest came just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji lost a bid to have Sonko’s nomination of Ann Kananu Mwenda as Deputy Governor quashed.

Haji had argued that Sonko’s nomination of Mwenda was in contravention of his bail terms which barred him from accessing his office.

“Sonko cannot purport to have the powers to name a deputy while his case is still active. His action is null and void,” he reiterated.

Represented by Peter Odhiambo Agoro, the DPP questioned the timing of Sonko’s nomination as it came after charges were preferred against him.

Haji claimed that Sonko’s nomination of a Deputy Governor was an attempt to sabotage the war on corruption.

Following the court’s decision, however, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi proceeded to table Mwenda’s name before the Committee of Appointments for consideration.

In a letter dated January 6, Sonko had nominated Mwenda for the Deputy Governor’s position which has remained vacant since Polycarp Igathe’s abrupt resignation on January 12, 2018.

“Given the foregoing, and in the interest of ensuring stability Nairobi and the largest County by economy and population, I do hereby nominate Anne Kananu Mwenda to the position of Deputy Governor,” he wrote at the time.
