  • An infuriated businessman on Tuesday, November 17, beat up a police constable to death after a dispute in Ngara area of Nairobi County.

The businessman, identified as Willy alias Rasta, was approached by Constable Joshua Lumwatum, when an argument ensued.

K24 reported that Rasta, who operates an electronic shop along Nyayo market in Ngara, assaulted the police officer who fell dead on the tarmac.

The suspect, upon noticing that the incident had begun raising the attention of nearby onlookers, instantly fled the scene.

“He was hit by Rasta and he fell on the tarmac. Rasta then fled towards the river. The two were arguing over an old office telephone that the suspect was selling,” an eyewitness spoke to K24.

Detectives from the Starehe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the incident noting that the body had been transferred to the Kenyatta University Mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

“We have launched investigations to establish what transpired. The suspect will be brought to book,” Starehe police commander noted.

This is not the first time that a security officer has been assaulted in the course of duty. In July, a police officer was beaten up and left for dead while enforcing Covid-19 safety guidelines.

Early this month, a senior DCI officer sustained serious injuries after he was beaten up by an angry mob in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

A similar incident in Mombasa County saw more than 100 traders battle police officers who had tried to enforce a directive given by Mombasa Governor, Hassan Joho.

The governor had directed that Kongowea market be closed for a period of thirty days upon which the traders stood their ground – after which a confrontation ensued.
