  • Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has proposed new changes that could see Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Amollo Odinga share power post August 2022 General Election.

Through a video message from Dubai where he is undergoing specialised treatment after suffering severe burns, the vocal lawmaker on Friday, December 31, rooted for the change in the percentage threshold used to determine the next Head of State at the lapse of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s term.

In his proposal, the percentage should be increased from the current 50 per cent plus one of the total presidential votes cast to 60 per cent and above.

“If you do not garner 60 per cent or more of the presidential vote, you have to form a government of national unity for a period of five years,” Kuria stated.

Justifying his proposal, the vocal legislator argued that his it would safeguard the country and ensure a smooth transition after Uhuru exits the stage.

“This will bring Kenya together and safeguard the country for future generations,” Kuria stated.

He added, “I fear for our beloved country Kenya. If you want to form a government by yourself, please be ready to garner more than 60 per cent.”

According to the recent poll released by Infotrak on Monday, December 27, the results placed Raila ahead of Ruto in countrywide popularity. The former prime minister garnered 33 per cent while the DP managed 32 per cent.

This indicated a steady rise for Raila with Ruto taking a deep in the presidential race however showing a neck to neck contest between the two.

Referring to the recent fracas experienced in the National Assembly, Kuria noted that the Political Parties Amendment Bill 2021 shows the tinderbox nature of the current political nature which portends trouble in the forthcoming General Election.

The leader of Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) noted the Bill should include his proposal to entrench a new presidential election winning formula.

In his message of peace, Kuria advised leaders to advocate for peaceful coexistence and sanity in their political statements.

“To all the people who are looking for elective seats, presidential seat especially, I want to tell them Kenyans love you a lot. But Kenyans don’t love you enough to die for you, So be advised accordingly. If it’s between you, and peace and the future of our children, Kenyans will choose peace and the future of our children over you. Don’t be misguided.”

Kuria echoed what the President said in his end-of-year message where he advised the electorates to make conscious decisions at the ballot.

“Leadership is about vision; politics is about positions. Leadership is about the next generation; politics is about the next election. And our obsession with politics has only slowed down the realization of our potential as a people,†President Kenyatta stated.

He added, “Kenya must choose the bold path over the popular path. We must choose the critical few who are bold over the trivial majority who are not. And there are examples around the world where the bold triumphed over the popular.”

Kenyatta reflected that the country needs to shift from law to justice arguing that Kenyans should not be enslaved by the law but should instead be served by it.
