  • Education CS George Magoha, on Saturday, March 13, partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and launched the distribution of textbooks to primary schools.

The exercise was conducted at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) offices. Magoha said that 1500 primary schools were targeted to receive the donation.

Over 826,000 English and Kiswahili books that will benefit Grades 1 to 4 as the main beneficiaries were released.

Magoha said the program would facilitate the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) which was rolled out in the country.

While thanking the US government, the CS acknowledged that the program would enable students to easily access education.

The CBC system comprises continuous assessments for learners. Teachers also encourage students to embrace critical thinking and decision making.

They were also tasked with drilling students to be prepared for sitting national exams. The task force which proposed the new curriculum said that most students ended up half-baked with little practical skills.

The new changes are based on the new curriculum demands where the focus has been shifted towards learner-centred education or putting emphasis on the growth of students. They are also aligned with creativity and digital learning.

Magoha on March 6 shared encouraging words with candidates who are expected to sit for national examinations.

“Do not worry about the examination. We are aware you were at home for nine months, so your hope must remain alive.

“Do not get stressed. If you believe in God, you will all pass,†he assured the students.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, on March 12 also wished them all the best prior to the national exams commencing.

“Sitting for your examinations after having been out of class for over six months, know that the entire country and I are rooting for you,” he stated.
