Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha on Sunday, July 5, revealed that teachers must test for Covid-19 ahead of a planned reopening.

Magoha was speaking after a consultative meeting with principles and college representatives at the Kenya School of Government in Embu.

The CS fired a warning to colleges that would fail to test their tutors noting that they would not be allowed to reopen amid the pandemic.

“We must test all the teachers before they go to class. They are not many, but if a teacher is Covid-19 positive, he or she has to stay at home.

“It is not his or her fault. I could be Covid-19 positive as I talk to you now and I am as strong as an eagle,” noted the Cabinet Secretary.

Magoha had previously stated that the biggest challenge the ministry was facing was how to effect social distancing in classes.

The date of school resumption is still unclear even after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that schools could resume in September 2020.

The former Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chairman hinted on Monday, June 29, that schools could be reopened in January 2021.

Magoha stated that schools will only reopen when the Covid-19 curve has been flattened as experts predicted it would happen in January.

Testing of teachers was one of the conditions on schools reopening issued by education stakeholder unions on Wednesday, May 27.

Part of the measures put in place by the government to protect students from Covid-19 is providing them with two masks each.

The government will also ensure that schools have adequate water to promote washing of hands which is one of the preventions of the deadly virus.
