  • Education Cabinet Secretary George Mahoga has announced that the government will be rolling out a free feeding program in schools.

Magoha was speaking to journalists after inspecting Mwakingali Primary School in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

The Education CS explained that the directive had come from President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Because of the intervention of His Excellency the President we are also going to feed children in the slums, including a slum like Bangladesh in Mombasa.

“The children who are in Standard One to Three will also get porridge that is fortified with soya elements and vitamins that is good for the development of their brains,†he announced.

The feeding program will not only target vulnerable students from slums but also from arid and semi-arid areas.

The intervention is expected to help in the retention of the students in learning institutions as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to ravage many families.

Magoha added that he was confident that all learners would be back to school by Monday, January 25.

Magoha also reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of pregnant learners.

“If you are pregnant and still strong and you come to school, that is the order. If you have just given birth and you require one or two months to stay at home, teachers will monitor and when the time comes, you come back to class.

There is no shame. Pregnancy is not a disease. We must continue to love our children. If you have found anybody who is blocking a female child from coming back to school because she’s pregnant, you can tell us and give us the details so that we can act,†he stated.
