  • Detectives cordoned off Kaunda Street in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) as investigations into the mysterious murder of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) employee, Lilian Waithera intensified.

On the better part of Thursday, February 16, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers camped on the street seeking answers to the Monday, February 13 incident.

According to reports, the detectives visited surrounding buildings along the street as they moved to determine where the mysterious bullet found in Waithera’s lungs came from.

During the operation, motorists and other bystanders were prohibited from using the street.

Additionally, the officers collected CCTV footage from the surrounding building as they sought to establish events before the 5 pm incident.

However, the police were hesitant to comment on their preliminary findings even as they promised to issue a detailed report in due course.

Waithera collapsed and died as she was walking home in the company of her colleagues on a fateful day.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the NHIF employee held her chest when she fell to the ground. An autopsy on the body revealed that there was a bullet in her lungs.

Given that no gunshots were heard, mystery emerged over the source of the bullet resulting in reports that a sniper was involved. The same is yet to be confirmed by the police.

“The incident happened around 5:15 pm. The lady was in the company of her colleagues. Suddenly, she appeared to be shocked as she looked at the sky. We all thought it was a heart attack,” an eyewitness recounted.

However, Lilian’s employee cautioned Kenyans against speculating over the death even as they asked Kenyans to accord the family privacy and respect.

“NHIF Management wishes to request members of the public to accord the family of the late Waithera a chance to mourn their loved one and to exercise patience during this extremely difficult time,” NHIF stated.
