  • Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga met with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Mombasa County.

Gachagua confirmed the meeting but declined to reveal details of their discussion.

“We have tremendous respect for our senior citizens. I was delighted this morning to have a tete-a-tete with our senior citizen, former Prime Minister Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga in Mombasa,” Gachagua stated.

An insider privy to the meeting further told Kenyans.co.ke that the two did not share minutes of their meeting.

“I can confirm that the two leaders met in Mombasa where DP Gachagua addressed the governor’s induction while Raila celebrated Governor Abdulswamad Nassir’s swearing-in ceremony.

“However, we are not aware of what we discussed,” the source close to Raila stated.

Raila Odinga campaign press secretary, Dennis Onsarigo, was unavailable when sought for comment.

The meeting between the two came a few hours after Raila Odinga arrived in the country from Zanzibar where he went for a holiday to recuperate.

Speaking to Azimio leaders in Mombasa, Raila disclosed that he travelled with his wife, children and grandchildren to recover from the shocking loss of the 2022 General Election and the subsequent ruling by the Supreme Court which upheld President William Ruto’s victory.

“I came this morning from Zanzibar and arrived late than expected. I was not able to be with you at the swearing-in (of Abdulswamad), but here I am.

“We will also not allow the Judiciary to become a dictator in this country. We can lead a one million march to the judiciary and tell them to go home. We have a right as a people to not agree with bad rulings. Shame on the judiciary of this country. We will talk,” Raila slammed the Supreme Court.

Notably, Ruto and Gachagua previously stated that they were willing to hold talks with Raila. However, they insisted that they would not have a handshake with the ODM boss as was the case in 2018.

In particular, Ruto underlined that the discussions would only centre on issues affecting Kenyans as he opined that the opposition needed to perform its mandated of keeping the government in check.

“I don’t believe in a handshake but in democracy. My competitors will be in the opposition providing checks and balances. If not, I risk running a mongrel of government that has no checks and balances,” Ruto stated then.
