  • The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu warned politicians against inciting the public to reject newly posted headteachers and principals.

On Thursday, February 23, Oyuu condemned the indifference cultivated towards teachers posted to head schools in regions that aren’t their native homes.

He asserted that the union would not condone the attacks on teachers based on tribal and regional lines.

“It is annoying to the union is the manner in which leaders have taken the issue of relocating teachers who have been delocalised.

“KNUT condemns in the strongest terms possible such utterances that will create total animosity and total incitement in some of our regions,” Oyuu stated.

He also explained that the ill-treatment of teachers would worsen the already worsening teacher shortage experienced in the country.

Some leaders went as far as claiming that any ‘foreign’ teacher would be downgraded and forced to work as assistants to local colleagues.

Oyuu explained that the Constitution allows every Kenyan to live and work in any part of Kenya, provided they have the requisite licence.

KNUT’s declaration comes after a spate of parents blocking learning activities in school to reject newly posted teachers.

On the flip side, a section of leaders has demanded that tutors from their region who were deployed in other areas be returned.

On February 23, Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thangwa demanded that all teachers from the Mount Kenya region deployed in Narok be redeployed to schools in the region.

Parents alleged they did not want to lose principals who had improved school performance. Others rejected principals accusing them of having poor performance records.
