Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri paid a surprise visit to a family whose plight shocked the country when their landlord removed the roof to their house over rent arrears.

In a post on his social media pages on Tuesday, May 5, Ngunjri announced that he had been moved by the plight of the family and visited her to make things right between the family and the landlord.

According to reports, Wilfred had gone to work only to return home to discover that their landlord had removed part of their house’s roof.

This was blame on accusations that they had been behind on rent by two months, and the landlord, seeing no other way, removed the roof to ensure the family paid up.

On getting there, however, the Bahati MP discovered that the landlord was nowhere to be seen and promised to return on Wednesday, May 6 to have a meeting between the tenant and the landlord to agree on the way forward.

Ngunjiri bought iron sheets to cover the part that had been removed so that the family could shield themselves from the ongoing rainfall and also gave a variety of foodstuff to the family to carter for them in the tough times

Ngunjiri called upon landlords to be kind to their tenants during the harsh economic times and explained that the pandemic had affected everyone globally.

“It is not the wish of the people to delay in meeting their financial obligations, Covid-19 has slowed economic growth globally and governments are grappling with how to turnaround their economies, but as this happens we should be our brothers’ keepers,” the MP stated.

The incident in Nakuru County is not the first case reported concerning landlords removing roofs from tenants’ houses following a disagreement, as was witnessed in Kariobangi North on April 20, 2020.

Jackson Macharia, the tenant whose roof was removed, insisted that the landlord’s actions were caused by rent arrears as he had alleged, since his neighbours too were yet to pay rent at the time.

”Last month I asked the landlord about the illegal water and electricity connections in his rentals as we were experiencing frequent power surges leading to the blowing of electronics. I also took issue with him charging us for illegally connected water.

”That’s where the problem began. Since then, he has been wanting me to move out of his rentals. I was to move out of the house, but today he came with goons and removed some iron sheets from the roof,” Macharia stated.
