Kenyans Turn on CS Kagwe as Deaths Race to 400 Mark

  • Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has learnt that Kenyans love to hate him with different themes every time his name becomes a trending topic.

On Sunday, August 2, the tough-talking CS found himself taking the blame for increasing deaths while bars and clubs remained shut.

Most argued that it was unfair for the CS to gradually open hotels, which they considered a social joint, while imposing punitive measures against bars and clubs.

Since hotels were reopened April 27, some 355 people have lost their lives to the virus that has infected more than 22,000 people in Kenya.

At the time of the announcement of the gradual reopening plan, the total case load countrywide stood at 363 with only 14 lives lost.

On Saturday, August 1, the country recorded its highest deaths from the virus, (23 cases). On Friday, the CS announced 10 deaths at Kiambu Level V Hospital alone in 24 hours.

“Health CS Mutahi Kagwe should be able to explain how, when, and where he gets these samples! He closed bars on the pretext that they contributed to the spread, but the cases seems to be soaring,” stated one Abuga Makori.

On Sunday, five more people succumbed to the disease raising the total to 369. In the last three days alone, 44 people have succumbed to the disease.

“There is one decision Mutahi Kagwe will probably regret. He re-opened pubs and he saw what happened but he still went ahead and re-opened churches. The next epicenter of Covid-19 will be churches and the scale of infection will be shocking,” shared another critic.

In April, the CS opened restaurants under 12 strict rules including a demand that hotels maintain social distancing, have thermoguns as well as tests all workers.

However, clever Kenyans invented the Kagwe special, allowing them to enjoy alcohol in restaurantas prompting the government to ban all eateries and restaurants from selling any form of alcoholic drinks.

This comes even as politicians, some holding high positions in government, continued breaking Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

The MPs who have been caught flouting the rules include Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja (found in a club past curfew hours), Kapseret MP Oscar Sude (when he flouted almost all the rules from the Ministry of Health while addressing and interacting with mourners at a burial service in Kabenes), and Francis Atwoli (when he hosted a luncheon at his home in Kajiado home).

On Saturday, the disease claimed young people including a 16-year-old with several others ranging between 22 and 28 years old, an age range that had been presumed to have strong immunity against the virus.

Some of the deceased were reported to have never had no underlying health conditions consistent with previous fatalities.
