Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni offered $100,000 (Ksh 10 million) towards a project being organised by the Kenyan government.

On Thursday, January 16, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KNCCI) announced that it’s Chairman, Richard Ngatia, was hosted by Museveni during the launch of Great Lakes Private Sector Forum in Uganda.

The forum was a precursor of the Great Lakes Investment and Trade Conference (GLITC) that will take place in Kigali, Rwanda on March 18 to March 20, 2020.

GLITC works towards the mobilization of private sector investment into the region to harness the extensive natural resources endowments and existing economic opportunities.

The Standard, on January 17, further reported that Museveni offered the money from his government to support the upcoming meeting.

Ngatia led a resource mobilisation meeting in Kampala, Uganda. His request for Uganda to support and attend the meeting triggered Museveni into offering the kind gesture.

“If we are to make the GLITC process a regular feature of our work, it is important to achieve national and regional ownership of the process. As we normally say in the chamber movement, ‘Trade unites nations’ and the event in Kigali is expected to extend our networks and outreach for market expansion, investment and regional cohesion.

“The private sector is an important addition in the achievement of the Pact for Peace, Security and Development in the Great Lakes region,” said Ngatia.

Ngatia affirmed KNCCI’s commitment to expanding cross-border trade while targetting youth and women.

On Saturday, December 21, Museveni also pledged Ksh 10 million towards the establishment of the William Ruto Leadership Institute at Makerere University.
