  • Kenya Railways will shut down a section of bus and train services on Tuesday, July 20- which was declared a public holiday by the government in order to mark Idd-Ul-Adha.

According to a notice by the corporation on Monday, July 19, the services would resume on Wednesday, July 21.

The following services will not be available:

    • Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR) Service- Ruiru, Embakasi village, Limuru, Syokimau, Kitengela

-Nairobi Commuter Rail Bus Service – Yaya, Westlands, Upperhill.

-Madaraka Express (ME) commuter phase II A service which heads to Rongai and Ngong

KR however pointed out that the Madaraka Express (ME) Link Trains and JKIA train and bus services would run as usual.

The news comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i issued a gazette notice that declared Tuesday, July 20 a national holiday in order for Muslims to mark Idd-Ul-Adha.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (2), as read with section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares that Tuesday, 20th July 2021 shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Adha, 2021,” the gazette notice read.

In the recent past, services offered by KR have been experiencing major disruptions primarily due to the restrictions that had been set by the government in order to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

This would ultimately cause Kenya Railways to announce new train schedules as well as offer alternatives in a bid to ensure the passengers are not inconvenienced.

The government has poured millions to ensure the revamp of the train services in order to offer an alternative to road transport.

This has seen KR introduce services such as bus transport, cattle transport services in order to woo customers to use rail transport.
