  • Motorists planning to use the Nairobi-Nakuru highway will have to contend with heavy traffic after a tanker overturned at Gilgil.

The Kenya National Highways Authority made the announcement on Friday, April 29, noting the road was impassable at the moment since the tanker ferrying oil spilt the product on the road.

The road accident at Kikopey has caused a traffic snarl-up along the busy highway and KeNHA has advised motorists to consider alternative routes in the meantime.

KeNHA also cautioned motorists planning to use the route that traffic will be disrupted and the road is slippery making it dangerous to drive on at the moment. Motorists were advised to be patient as authorities worked to clear the busy road.

“Motorists are advised that a tanker ferrying oil lost control and overturned at Kikopey, spilling the oil on the Carriageway making the road surface slippery. This has caused a traffic snarl-up along the Gilgil-Nakuru road section.

“Efforts to clean the road surface with the help of the County Government of Nakuru and the Performance Based Contractor are underway,” KeNHA stated.

Last year, police and the Nairobi County fire department were forced to wash a section of Outering Road following an oil and grease spillage as a result of a road accident.

The washing exercise led to heavy traffic along the road as motorists plying the route opted for alternatives.

After the incident, three cars overturned due to the oil spillage.
