Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi was arrested along 18 others while drinking at a pub in Ruai.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi County commander Phillip Ndolo revealed that the legislator was taken into custody for flouting the national directive to social distance, as the country fights to tame the spread of Covid-19.

Ndolo issued a warning to anyone subverting the given guidelines stating that police had been deployed to ensure the directives are fully adhered to.

“I am warning everyone, police are working even harder to bring to account those defying the directives issued by the government so as to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” Ndolo pronounced.

Mwangi’s arrest comes on the back of several arrests that have been made by the police over the past week.

On Friday, April 10, 2020, a magistrate and a Kenya Defence Forces colonel were arrested in a night crackdown by the police while partying the night away in a bar in Embakasi, Nairobi.

Police had acted on a tip-off, nabbing the two, along with 28 other revellers who were found to be flouting various directives issued by the government on curbing the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

The government shut down bars as restaurants were directed the latter to offer take-away services only between 5 a.m and 7 p.m

In another incident on April 5, 2020, an officer attached to the office of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa was arrested flouting the curfew order.

Corporal William Wamalwa was arrested on Sunday night, April 5, 2020, at Kangundo Road along with two KDF soldiers with the ranks of Warrant Officer, a Directorate of Criminal Investigations detective, and seven police officers after they were caught drinking alcohol past the allowed time.

Concerned members of the public alerted the police headquarters that there were people holed up in a bar, out of which officers were dispatched to the scene, making the arrest.
