Wanjigi was speaking at a town hall meeting in Homa Bay County, on September 17, where he met youth drawn from the wider Luo Nyanza.
Wanjigi, who is challenging Raila Odinga for the ODM presidential ticket, said he is the key to ensuring the region tastes State power, which they have struggled to get for decades in vain.
While applauding people from the region for their enthusiasm, he said one of his missions during the visit is to urge the youth to register in large numbers so as to help him wrestle State power through the ODM party.
“Today I am here to do politics. Do you know what is power, have you ever tasted power ever since 1963? I want to make sure you taste power,†Wanjigi stated, eliciting applause.
He went on to tell the youth how close he was to Raila, recalling how he offered the ODM leader refuge decades ago when he was wanted by the government of late President Daniel Moi and how Raila reciprocated in 2017 by saving him from the excess of the current regime.
“In 1991 when Raila was being chased by President Daniel Moi’s government, I offered him a safe place to hide,” said Wanjigi, to the excitement of the crowd.
“Twenty-seven years later, when I was wanted by Jubillee government he (Raila) helped me hide,†he went on.
Wanjigi tour in the region hasn’t been successful. Chaos broke for the second time while he was addressing a crowd in Migori on Friday, September 17 after he was pelted with stones.
In the first instance, chaos broke out at his event in Homa-bay, after youth forcefully gained entry into a venue.
In a statement seen by kenyagist.com , the ODM party has condemned the violence and asked the authorities to make sure all those involved are brought to book.
The Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna has also confirmed that he has reached out to Wanjigi and he is fine.
