The two met on Sunday, June 20, 2021, after a 12-hour walk from Karen to Gichiingo area near Kijabe Hospital where Tuju’s car had the accident.
The CSs shared an emotional hug as they recalled the events of the fateful day. The driver of the matatu which collided with Tuju’s Toyota Prado was also present – having recovered after serious injuries that saw him break both his legs.
According to Jubilee communications officer Polycarp Hinga, who attended the event, the SG recalled how Amina, who was headed to Kabarak for the late President Daniel Moi’s funeral, cut her trip short to drive Tuju to hospital.
“I told her I was going to die, I was sure of it and she told me to shut up!” recalled Tuju.
Tuju’s walk from Karen to Kijabe hospital was aimed at raising funds for a theatre, ultrasound and x-ray machines.
The CS was involved in a grisly accident while on his way to former President Daniel Moi’s funeral in Kabarak.
Photos from the accident, which occurred at the Magina area on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, showed a poorly damaged car.
He was airlifted from the scene to Karen Hospital for specialised treatment before he was flown to the United Kingdom.
In March that year, in a press conference, he disclosed that he was put on life support after his lungs collapsed and he had 13 broken ribs.
“My lungs collapsed because I had 13 broken ribs and doctors had to make the life and death decision by removing the life support system so that I would go for specialised treatment in London,” he stated.
Since getting back onto his feet then, Tuju continued nursing injuries and in February 2021, he confirmed that over 18 bones had been broken in his body.
At the beginning of May, Hinga revealed that Tuju had successfully trekked for 50 kilometres to raise funds for Kijabe Hospital where he received emergency treatment.
The CS noted that it was miraculous he could hit such a milestone considering that he was on life support at some point in 2020.
