  • Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Friday, February 26, asked the court to allow him go to South Africa urgently for surgery.

His doctor, Esther Wekesa, in a report, stated that the former County boss needed a hip replacement surgery urgently adding that Sonko had already started developing arthritis.

“Avascular necrosis can lead to severe complications such as bone collapse or even fracture if left untreated,” she said.

Sonko was taken to the Nairobi Hospital in early February where he has been receiving treatment. Prior to the ailment, he had been arrested and was due to face terrorism charges.

“We have chosen the services of Dr. Robert Van Der Plank from South Africa. His services are highly recommended. Plank, however, cannot travel to the Country at the moment and says that he will review Sonko in Johannesburg,” Wekesa stated.

One of Sonko’s aides Benjamin Odhiambo alias Solo, who had also been arrested on terrorism-related accusations, has been released.

Solo spend 25 days in custody before his lawyer John Khaminwa convinced the court that the client was innocent.

“I’m not a terrorist. I was arrested because the former governor is my friend. I have forgiven all those who wanted to destroy my future,” he added.

Solo added that on the day he was arrested, he was blindfolded and taken to places he did not know. He stated that he was driven to a home by unknown people and some of his items taken.

“They took most of the electronics including my children’s laptop,” he stated.

He, however, lauded the police officers at the Muthaiga Police Station for the treatment they had given him during his stay there.

“I was allowed a mattress and food from home. I am grateful to the officers,” he stated.
