In a well-tailored Instagram post, the celebrated former TV girl recounted that she called it quits at night after enduring domestic abuse while married to Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi.
When push came to shove, Majala literally walked out of the marriage with her handbag and had to build herself from scratch.
Referencing to her success, the sassy presenter encouraged others who were going through difficult situations to dust themselves up and carry on with life.
“Two years later, the courage of walking away at night with only a handbag and starting from scratch, I tell you today, it is possible to get back on your feet no matter your story.
“The noise, the damaging articles, the scrutiny, speculation and the disrespect from intruders who thought it is possible to break through someone’s wall and camp next to it. Let nobody tell your story,” shared Majala.
The former anchor went through a highly publicised divorce and came out triumphant after her ex-husband offered to arrange an out-of-court settlement over an assault case she had filed against him in August 2019.
In the settlement, the anchor was set to receive in the upwards of Ksh3 million.
A guilty verdict would have earned the MP a two-year jail term, which would have automatically caused him to lose his seat in the National Assembly.
In February 2018, the outspoken anchor sent out an alarming message on her social media account claiming that her life was in danger.
“Writing this with a lot of fear. My life is in danger. This evening at about 9.50 p.m. my husband Mwingi Central Member of Parliament Gideon Mulyungi assaulted me at our Karen home and I sustained head injuries at the back of my ear, resulting to my left ear going numb,” she shared at the time.
In their divorce case, Majala described the controversial MP as “a man with unforgivable temper”.
The media personality quit NTV on December 25, 2019.
Speaking in what turned out to be her last news broadcast on Christmas Day, she gracefully thanked her viewers as well as employers for giving her the platform to express her passion.
She left the station after one and a half years of hosting the Sunday prime time news.
“Good evening good people! It’s been an honour gracing your screens on NTV informing and educating you through the news. A big Thank you to the Nation Media Group management for the platform & to my colleagues, for the wonderful experience,” she stated.
Following the exits of popular anchors such as Trevor Ombija from the same station, Doreen´s Sunday bulletin rose to fame thus making her a household name.
A lawyer by profession, she embarked on her journey in media back in 2016 and honed her craft at Ebru TV.
During her tenure at NTV, she started a foundation, The Doreen Majala Foundation, which focuses on education.
“It works towards creating equal learning opportunities for every child by providing basic learning materials to children in underprivileged schools,” she stated in a past interview.
She joined NMG at a time when it was re-branding and was thus unveiled alongside other media stars such as Harith Salim, Jane Ngoiri and Dan Mule were Swaleh Salim, Nuru Abdulaziz and Kaltun Jama.
Doreen is pursuing a master’s degree in arbitration, a field she has countlessly referred to as one of her key passions.
In regards to her next move, the journalist remained coy, opting to keep that particular card close to her chest.
