  • Southern Engineering Company Limited (SECO) is a company that manufactures ships for both the local and international markets.

It is a member company of Alpha Group, a conglomerate of companies dealing with engineering, logistics, supply chain management, fishing, and fresh food markets.

Alpha Group started as a fishing company over sixty years ago. Faced with increasing demand for fish and other fish products, the company resorted to hiring vessels.

However, the ships kept breaking down. To save on time and cost, they began repairing the ships themselves. This marked the birth of SECO.

SECO continued repairing ships over the years until they perfected the art. They also offered other engineering services. The company would then begin building ships from scratch. They also built boats cargo and banker barges.

They attracted local clients such as Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Ferry Services. Soon other clients from neighboring Tanzania, and other East African countries begun approaching them.

The shipbuilding process involves the preparation of the skid, body plan loafing, and plate cutting. The keel is then built, followed by formulating the hull shape.

The hull is then plated before it is inverted after which a bridge end is constructed. Workes install the engine and begin paintwork. Depth marks are engraved before marked before being unslipped to the ocean.

The shipping company has built three ships, Burudani 1,2,& 3 for Tanzania Ports Authority and MV Umurage for Rwanda. It has also built the Amazi and Seco Poa 3 ships.

On March 21, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched Kenya Shipyard Limited (KSL) in Kisumu. During the launch, KSL unveiled MV Uhuru, a vessel they revived after it had grounded for 13 years

” In support for the Big Four Agenda, the KSL shall catalyze shipbuilding and technology transfer and we shall provide an opportunity for the improvement of our operations,” remarked the Head of State.
