  • A Mombasa couple allegedly conned 10 unsuspecting businessmen more than Ksh20 million in under three weeks.

The couple who introduced themselves as husband and wife scammed the businessmen through a fake Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) operating under the name Real Life Foundation Kenya.

The two claimed to be on a mission to aid the needy in the country through their NGO and went ahead to sign a two-year lease with a real estate company to use the premises as their offices.

The real estate firm claim that the couple came to their offices where they presented documents and signed the lease that commenced on Saturday, August 1.

The couple is said to have used the premises to lure businessmen through tenders advertised on social media asking them to supply CCTV cameras, computers, printers, furniture and thermoguns.

A number of businessmen have been left counting losses after supplying goods worth millions to the couple.

Mercy Wanjiru supplied 500 thermoguns worth Ksh1.6 Million after the said NGO promised to wire the money in two weeks time.

“I tried contacting them afterwards, but the number was off. I decided to visit the location where I delivered the goods. I was shocked to find a sign written: “House to Let”.

“They had a website that they later pulled down. When I went to their office, they were so professional and that made me lower my guard,” she explained.

Kennedy Kisiangani was also among the 10 businessmen allegedly conned by the NGO as he was issued with a Local Purchasing Order (LPO) of supplying CCTV cameras to five children homes in Mombasa.

With his business based in Nairobi, he travelled to Mombasa to deliver the order but did not receive the money after the two weeks promised elapsed.

“I went to the house agent where the couple had rented, but they were also puzzled that the ‘NGO’ had moved.

“The employees who were working for the NGO were also stranded, not understanding what was going on after the couple took off,” said Kisiangani.

Despite the incidences happening over two months ago, no arrests have been made, but police claim they have obtained key leads in the pursuance of the couple.

Police are however facing a challenge as the IDs used to register the NGO and signing of the lease being fake with the website they were using also pulled down.
