  • Bishop Gilbert Deya is back in the public limelight over the miracle babies saga almost four years since he was extradited from the UK.

On Monday, September 19, a Principal Magistrate’s court ruled that Deya has a case to answer in five counts of stealing five children, all under 14 years. He was accused of committing the crime on different days between 2002 and 2004 in the Mountain View estate in Nairobi.

The court ordered the televangelist to appear in court to defend himself against reports claiming that he miraculously created pregnancies that led to the birth of five children listed in the case.

Deya was further accused of obtaining birth certificates unlawfully.

“The investigations led a multi-agency team to a house within Komarock Estate, Nairobi, where they traced the couple and 11 children aged below five years,” the testimony presented in court read in part.

“The couple and the said children were detained by the police, and blood samples of the children and the couple were thereafter extracted and forwarded to the Government Chemist for DNA analysis.” the testimony filed in court added.

Trails by detectives led them to Mountain View estate, where they reportedly found another baby. The pastor was accused of targetting minors whose identities were conflicted.

Following the ruling, Deya’s legal team pledged to collaborate with the court by providing sworn evidence and calling witnesses on the stand during the trial starting on October 4.

The pastor, however, denied all the allegations levelled against him.

Deya, who was deported from the UK on August 3, 2017, will stage his defence in a bid to clear his name and end the miracle babies scandal that has lasted for over two decades.

In 2015, Mary Deya, his wife, was sentenced to three years after the Kibera court found her guilty of stealing a baby at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The Kibera court established that Deya’s wife gave false testimonies on September 10, 2005, and even went ahead to convince a doctor that she had given birth.

Mary, however, accused the police of fixing her, arguing that they orchestrated a plot to tarnish her reputation.

“To this day, I cannot explain or find answers to the said malicious claims. All these started on August 20, 2004, and I still vividly the genesis of my woes.  The police came to my house without any arrest warrant, harassed and ordered me to give them the children’s birth certificates.

“I have never been arrested in my life or taken to court. They ransacked my house and ordered me to report to the Criminal Investigation Department. Little did I know that it was a trick to take away my children,” Mary told the Standard in 2015.
