  • A businessman in Nyeri County was charged with forgery of documents and letters of administration with the intention of claiming a multibillion property which belonged to the late Wathuku Ngure.

The prosecutor claimed that the accused altered documents to show that he was the billionaire’s son. Charles Chomba alias Wathuku was charged with seven counts of forgery.

State Counsel Allan Wanjohi argued that Chomba took advantage of the fact that the late Ngure did not have an heir to his inheritance which includes a parcel of land valued at Ksh2 billion.

He stated that Chomba made a false statement at the Registrar of Births on November 24, 2006, and altered the dates in his birth certificate.

The second account was changing location details in his identification card to suit his claims.

The prosecutor also noted that the accused had reportedly written a false affidavit which he claimed was written by the late Wathuku. This affidavit was then used to sell a plot of land, belonging to Wathuku, for Ksh16 million.

The prosecutor also revealed that Chomba was in cahoots with his wife, Lydia Chomba. The two changed the name of the affidavit in order to suit the scheme and be able to sell the plot of land.

Chomba, who denied the seven counts, pleaded with the court to release him on a free bond alluding that he was not a security threat.

His lawyer Douglas Ombongi, also pointed out that the accused was facing similar charges of forgery in another case.

“Were my client to escape, he would have a lot to lose, ” Ombongi noted.

However, Wanjohi opposed the request for free bond arguing that the argument was not valid.

“The estate in question is at stake if the court grants the accused free bond, ” Wanjohi stated.

Based on the arguments, the court granted the accused a Ksh500,000 bond and the case was adjourned to Wednesday, November 25.
