  • The family of former Tourism Minister Protus Momanyi on Friday, July 10, pleaded with the government for assistance in settling a hospital bill amounting to Ksh1.5 Million.

Momanyi, who also served as the MP for Bonchari passed away on July 4 at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after battling diabetes for a long period.

The family spokesperson noted that the former legislator’s family had been overwhelmed by the bill and were looking for avenues for a decent burial.

“We are appealing to national government through our local leader and also to friends and wellwishers to assist raise funds and give him a good send-off,” the family representative stated.

The former lawmaker was Bonchari Constituency’s first MP when it was created in 1988 and he won the election on a Kenya African National Union (KANU) ticket.

He maintained the seat during the 1992 General Elections and served in the capacity until he was ousted in 1997 by John Zebedeo Opore.

During his time in Parliament, the deceased rose to become a Cabinet Minister in former President Daniel Moi’s government.

He served as Minister for Tourism and Wildlife and also worked as an assistant minister in two different capacities.

He was considered one of the most influential politicians from the Kisii region until he was ousted opting to lead a quiet life in his village.

He later ventured into farming where he owns over 200 acres of land and preferred dairy and crop farming.
