Award-winning conservationist Dr Paula Kahumbu broke the news on her social media pages, stating that Stuchburry was shot four times in her driveway at
Kahumbu alleged that the murder was related to the activist’s fight for environmental conservancy.
“Joanna Stuchburry was shot dead. She is known for her relentless attempts to protect Kiambu Forest from developers. Nothing was stolen (during the shootout). May she rest in eternal peace and may the culprits be caught and punished, “Kahumbu eulogised.
Her neighbours who spoke to kenyagist.com stated that the conservationist walked into an ambush. The gang waylaid her at around 5 pm as she was strolling in the neighbourhood.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers visited the crime scene to conduct forensic analysis and launch investigations into the murder.
President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned the late Kenyan environmentalist and condemned her brutal death. In his message of condolence, Uhuru lauded Stuchburry’s contribution to conserving the environment.
“It is very sad, unfortunate and regrettable that bad people have senselessly taken away the life of Joanna Stuchburry in such a senseless manner.
“For the longest time, Joanna has been a steadfast champion for the conservation of our environment and is remembered for her relentless efforts to protect Kiambu forest from encroachment,” the President stated in the press release issued by State House on Friday morning, July 16.
He also ordered security agencies to track down and apprehend the perpetrators, dubbing them cowardly enemies of the Kenyan nation.
Uhuru further prayed to God to give the family of Ms Joanna Stuchburry strength and fortitude to bear the tragic loss of their loved one.
“My government will pursue and apprehend the criminals behind the killing of Joanna. We will not allow a few misguided individuals to continue shedding the blood of innocent people working hard to make Kenya a better place for all of us,” he assured.
