  • A witness recounted the final moments leading to the accident involving three vehicles along the Eastern Bypass near Kamakis in Nairobi County.

A boda boda operator, who was among the first people on the scene, affirmed to the press that he had just dropped a customer off in the nearby area.

The operator was on his way to pick up another passenger before he witnessed a speeding Toyota Land Cruiser Prado ram a tuk-tuk from behind which subsequently hit a matatu parked by the roadside.

He affirmed that the tuk-tuk was in a mangled state and after the cloud of dust settled, the Prado had overturned and was on the side of the road.

“I had just dropped a customer off in the area and I was on my way to pick up another person when I heard a loud bang.”

“When I looked back I saw the tuk-tuk that I had left at the stage picking passengers, and a cloud of dust where the Prado had overturned and landed off the road,” he noted.

The driver of the Prado was accused by bystanders of causing the accident due to driving under the influence. A total of six people succumbed, including the tuk-tuk driver, a mother and her 11-year-old child.

The drunk driver escaped death by a whisker after the airbags were deployed. Police officers who rushed to the scene saved the driver from the angry bystanders who bayed for his blood.

Residents urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect bumps along the Eastern bypass to prevent further accidents- noting that another accident had occurred a few metres from the same spot.

“I am still in shock and disbelief. I cannot believe they are all gone,” said one of them. “Just a week ago, there was another accident a few metres from here where a trailer transporting flour overturned. Even the flour has not completely cleared up,” another witness recounted.
