The businessman’s brother, Benson Maina, stated that the conflict commenced after Mbaria parked his Toyota Harrier by the roadside, outside his business premises.

It was then that he was accosted by six officers, two in police uniform and four others in plain clothes.

A crowd converged as the police repeatedly manhandled him as he tried to free himself from their grasp.

The altercation caused a traffic snarl-up along the Nairobi-Malaba Highway, as motorists also stopped to witness the incident.

The cause of the conflict has not yet been established. However, it comes at a time police officers have been on the spotlight for manhandling Kenyans, especially while effecting directives set up to curb the spread of Covid-19.

On Friday, May 1, an undated video of police officers arresting a man from his house for allegedly not wearing a mask surfaced online. The video as seen by kenyagist.com shows police officers by the door demanding that the man and his family get out of the bedroom.

“They want me to get out of my house along with my family in the name of not wearing a mask. You can see them at the door, and this is my bedroom. How can wear a mask in my bedroom?” the man poses.

“What kind of harassment is this? If you are taking me out, take me along with my family. Will you be taken out of your house for not wearing a mask?” he added, as a police officer at the door insisted that he comes out.

Police have also been accused of aiding individuals break government directives in Nairobi County, as they were reported to be allowing matatus and unregistered personnel move in and out of the county despite President Uhuru Kenyatta initiating the cessation of movement.
