The warning was issued after the DCI’s Serious Crimes Unit arrested a suspect in connection with the mysterious disappearance of young women from various city colleges.
The 21-year-old suspect hatched his scheme on various tour and travel social media groups where he camouflaged as a wealthy suitor who was willing to give them a treat of their lives.
After convincing his victims that he was capable of taking them to their dream holiday destinations, he would send them busfare and arrange a meet up in the city guest rooms. He would then proceed to rob and mistreat his helpless victims.
“The suspect would lure the young girls to lodgings in Nairobi after sending them busfare, then rob them of their valuables before disappearing to his hideout,” read part of the DCI statement.
The Serious Crimes Unit under the office of the DCI had been deployed to bring the suspect to book. Upon rigorous investigations, the officers apprehended the fraudster who ultimately led them to his hideout.
Valuable stolen possessions belonging to the victims were recovered. The office of the DCI admonished the actions carried out by such perpetrators who preyed on young unsuspecting victims but also urged ladies to be cautious when dealing with strangers on social media sites.
“We are appealing to young ladies to be wary of such criminals preying on them on social networking sites,” DCI stated.
As the world moves into the digital space, perpetrators are also devising new schemes to add on to their tactics. Most recently the DCI detectives had pounced on an online dating ring which used to lure men who were then kidnapped, tortured and then robbed.
Their ring leader, a lady, would bait the unsuspecting men into the hands of her crime syndicate.
“At least three men were lured to a home in mid-June under the guise of socialising with an attractive woman. When they arrived, a woman met them in the driveway and escorted them inside. The victims were then robbed, ‘viciously tortured’ and beaten,†police said.
