  • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to aid with investigations into the alleged night raid of his residence on Wednesday, February 8.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Senior Superintended Michael Sang invited Matiang’i to provide information in the ongoing investigations of the claims that his house had been surrounded by officers attached to an elite police unit.

The DCI affirmed that Matiang’i was a person of interest in the case and thus would provide crucial information in the process of unravelling the mystery surrounding the night raid claims.

The former CS was ordered to present himself before the DCI at its Headquarters along Kiambu Road for interrogation on Friday, February 24 at 9:30 am.

In the statement, DCI accused Matiang’i of being party to the publication of false information hence contravening the Cyber Crime Act laws.

“I have reasons to believe that you, Dr Fred Matiangi, the former Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Co-ordination, is connected to the offence or has information which can assist me in my investigations,” the statement read in part.

The summon came hours after Matiang’i’s legal team secured an extension of High Court orders preventing his arrest.

The decision was made after a court hearing presided by Justice Justus Bwonwong’a extended the anticipation bail granted to the former CS on February 9.

Earlier on Thursday, February 23, the Law Society of Kenya protested the move by the DCI to summon lawyer Danstan Omari in connection with the night raid claims.

Omari – who was acting for the former CS – was present during the alleged night raid and went on to address the media alongside a host of politicians allied to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.

However, LSK members led by President Eric Theuri condemned the move, describing it as a violation of the lawyer’s rights.

“We condemn and strongly do so the actions of the DCI to attempt to summon advocates over cases that they are handling and over matters that they have had discussions with their clients in an attempt to pierce advocate-client confidentiality,” the LSK President noted.
