A Covid-19 patient reportedly slit his own throat hours after being taken to Mbagathi Hospital on Saturday, April 25.

A source familiar with the matter told kenyagist.com that the incident took place at around 10 p.m. on Saturday.

The man, aged 30, attempted to commit suicide using a florescent tube which he broke before using it to slit his own throat.

He had been admitted to the facility on the same day at around 6 p.m.

“No human being has the power to understand why people commit suicide or even attempt. If there is anyone with this ability then suicide would be a thing of the past. He did not say why,” Nairobi Police Commander Philip Ndolo told kenyagist.com.

Medical personnel at the facility heard the man struggling in his room and rushed to help him.

“We told him he is young and will recover. We informed him he was not the only one who is sick and that all shall be well,” the medics are quoted reassuring the man.

A report by Standard Digital noted that police were allowed to access the facility after properly donning protective gear.

The incident was filed at Kilimani Police Station.

The patient was among the more than 300 positive cases reported countrywide with a majority being in Nairobi.

A number of Kenyans who have been under quarantine in different areas including Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) have complained of harsh treatment and hefty costs.

They claimed that the living conditions were unbearable and, in some cases, after the 14-day mandatory quarantine period is over, there stay at the institutions would get extended.
