  • Popular actor Sophia Muhia who plays Maria in the Citizen TV hit show Mother in Law opened up about her divorce which pulled the curtain on her 16-year marriage.

Speaking in a recent interview, Muhia explained that her marriage became rocky upon the realization that she was expecting a third child.

She stated that she got married at 19 years of age, and had her first child at 21 years, the second one came when she was 24, and her last born at 33 years of age.

“When I got pregnant with my last born, my husband started behaving unusually. He told me to raise the baby with whoever had told me to have a third child. I thought the 9-year gap between the second and third child put him off, and that he would return after I gave birth,†she spoke.

Unfortunately, Sophia’s husband had taken off for good and she had to raise the newborn on her own.

The actress was forced to start life afresh after losing her house in Nairobi’s Komarock Estate due to mounting debt.

The mother of three also opened up about how Covid-19 had made life difficult after her revenue sources were affected by government restrictions on gatherings and public events.

“As entertainers, we rely on social gatherings where we get gigs at weddings and other events, but now I have been at home for one year,†she lamented.

Sophia revealed that Mother in Law was supposed to resume shooting, but the third wave of Covid-19 has cancelled the plans.

“Even a simple scene involving me and Mustafa requires camera operators, people to do the lighting, a boom mic operator as well as a makeup artist which forms a crowd,†she explained.

Sophia also expressed her frustration with the high rate of unemployment in Kenya, giving the example of her children who were still struggling to get jobs.

“I have two graduates in the house. I have a lawyer and my daughter has done agribusiness. Children get depressed because they see how much parents sacrifice to educate them, but when they finish school, there are no jobs,†she said.
