Shock gripped residents of Kituu village, Kwale County on Wednesday morning, April 16, after they found a body dumped on a roadside.

According to the Standard, the body of 80-year-old Bora Beuchi had been buried 14 days ago in a ceremony attended by his family members.

He succumbed on April 3 at his home after an unsuccessful surgery at Kinango sub-county Hospital.

Beuchi’s son, Shabaan Bora, stated that the burial took place away from their ancestral home, as per his wishes.

It was a shock, however, after his body was exhumed by unknown people and left by the roadside next to the deceased’s home.

While confirming the incident, Kinango sub-county police commander Federick Ombaka, stated that the police have launched investigations into the matter.

Additionally, Ombaka asked the dead man’s family members to rebury the body as morgues were restricted in line with government Covid-19 directives.

The incident came days after the burial of a Covid-19 Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) employee, went viral.

The man had been buried at night in a shallow grave and without a coffin.

A section of Kenyans had decried the callous way in which the state handled the situation without involving the deceased’s family members.

In a press briefing on Monday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe informed that the manner of the disposal of bodies would have to change in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Be mentally prepared to accept that Covid-19 victim bodies shall be disposed of in a manner that protects the living from infections and in accordance with the Ministry of Health burial protocols,” he warned.
