Blind Officer Awarded by Uhuru for Fighting Off Militia

  • President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred police officer Julius Karanja Irungu with the silver star medal during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, December 12.

    The officer and his colleagues were ambushed and hit by an improvised explosive devise while on patrol on December 27, 2019. 

    The officer was able to repel the Al Shabaab militants and also called for reinforcement in good time, despite being injured.

    He, however, lost his sight permanently. Due to his selfless service to the country Karanja was one of his service to the country was re outstanding.

    The President also awarded Paul Mauki Gaicho, a soldier who was enlisted in the Kenya Defense Forces in November 2013.

    On March 11, 2016, Senior Private Gaicho, together with 22 other soldiers were heading back to their work station in Kiunda on board a boat from Manda Island. 

    However, the boat capsized at around 5 pm when they were at Mlango, 1km from the deep sea. Gaicho was the only swimmer amongst the soldiers.

    The soldier took control of the situation and gave viable orders and directions to the other officers. He also physically aided them to hang onto the boat until they reached the shore at around 3:30 pm the next day.

    The military officers survived a 23-hour ordeal with Gaicho having risked his life for his colleagues. . 

    Catherine Ndereba, who is currently the assistant commissioner of prisons, was awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear for her outstanding performance in sports.

    She also received a book that has documented record-breaking performances by Kenyan athletes across the globe.

    In 2004, Ndereba won gold in a 42km marathon in Paris, France. In 2007, she also emerged the winner in a similar race in Osaka, Japan.
