The explosives found in the border town of Isebania are believed to have been sneaked into Kenya from Tanzania where they were ferried using motorcycles.
According to KRA, 2,560 pieces of suspected explogel explosives with a brand name, explogel V6 were found stuffed in polypropylene bags and packed in 16 cartons each weighing 25 kilograms.
Officers from the Customs and Border Control Department indicated that the explosives could have been manufactured in South Africa.
“KRA in partnership with the National Police Service were acting on intelligence that the illegal goods had been stored in a warehouse around Isebania town,” reads an excerpt of the statement.
A suspect has since been arrested handed over to Anti Terror Police Unit awaiting completion of investigations and prosecution.
On the other hand, the goods have been stored at the Customs warehouse in Isebania.
The incident came just months after Customs officers in Taita Taveta intercepted 1000 pieces of explosive detonators in Mwakitau along Taveta-Mombasa Highway.
Border points serve as points of entry for different goods in the country.
However, some individuals use borders to ship illegal and restricted goods into the country.
KRA has vowed to continue working with the multiagency team to ensure that security is beefed along the borders.
The operation will enable KRA to eliminate illicit trade along the borders.
