  • Parents stormed a primary school to demand that the headteacher be taken to task for allegedly misusing money meant for Covid-19 containment at the learning institution.

The enraged parents stormed Gicherori primary school in Embu, and confronted the headteacher, Silas Karanja, over misuse of funds among a wide range of other cases.

The headteacher had to run for his life after the parents stormed the compound – and threatening to bet him up.

Karanja was accused of endangering children’s life by pocketing money meant to purchase equipment to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The school head was also accused of cutting down trees within the school and running the school with an iron fist.

“We went with the headteacher to the bank and withdrew Ksh 27,000. I thought the money was meant to purchase sanitizers, handwashing detergents, and thermo-guns. The school also has a desk shortage. So when he cut down trees, I assumed it was meant to provide materials for that.

“I was not informed when the trees were cut down, neither did he tell me how much he sold them for,” said Stephen Kinyua, the school chair.

Manyata sub-county education director Evans Ogamba who was at the school promised to investigate the allegations to salvage the situation.

“The school will be run by the deputy headteacher. The headteacher will report to my office in a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission. I will consult with the commission on the way forward,” he remarked.

Embu North Deputy County commissioner Jeremiah Tumo ordered the freezing of the school account.

“The account should be suspended. Unless authorized by the ministry, no withdrawal and expenditure will be done,” he said in conclusion.

The Ministry of Health mandated all institutions to provide water, soap, sanitizers, thermo-guns and ensure masks are worn at all times, a directive he ignored.
