Kandara MP Alice Wahome, a close confidant of Deputy President William Ruto, issued a statement lamenting that she feared for her life after her security detail was withdrawn.

On Monday, February 3, Wahome, who has been a vocal critic of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, took to Twitter to voice her frustration.

“My personal security detail has been withdrawn today. I have been receiving threatening phone messages and press conferences have been held to warn me of dire consequences. My life is in danger,” Wahome cried out.

The legislator did not disclose whether she had recorded a statement with relevant authorities as efforts to reach her were futile.

However, in her statement, she tagged Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and the Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai, as she sought to pass her message across.

On Wednesday, January 15, Wahome had accused leaders in the Kieleweke faction of the Jubilee Party of plotting against her life after she criticised Kenyatta, accusing him of stifling freedoms and democracy.

She once again alleged that she received a harrowing phone call from an unidentified man who threatened to kill her.

“A man called me last week and threatened to kill me. Some leaders allied to Kieleweke are after my life and, should my constituents fail to locate me, they should be interrogated over my whereabouts,” Wahome told her constituents after 22 students were arrested while plotting to disrupt her function.

On Thursday, January 2, the legislator accused the government of conducting a witchhunt on DP Ruto’s allies, arguing that freedom of speech was being curtailed by Kenyatta.

“I want to tell Kenyans that the biggest existential threat to Kenya’s declining economy, democracy, freedom of speech and political association is Uhuru Kenyatta because he is on the driver’s seat.

“Raila Odinga is his new mercenary for hire and the BBI report is the special purpose vehicle,” she opined.

On Friday 10, 2020, Wahome and other Ruto allies (Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and blogger Dennis Itumbi) were forced to scamper for safety after police stormed their press conference, hurling tear gas canisters at them at Kilimani Police Station, Nairobi, where Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria had been detained over an alleged assault.

During the media address, Wahome had claimed that Kenyatta’s regime reminded her of the dark days during former president Daniel arap Moi’s era.

“We called Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai and DCI George Kinoti, who also had the same response on Kuria’s release. We wonder what is this ‘order from above’ yet the court issued an order. Orders from above was a very common terminology during the Moi era (retired President Daniel Arap Moi’s regime),”

On Friday, January 10, Joash Maangi, another Ruto ally, reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations that his life was in danger since his security had been withdrawn.

The Kisii County deputy governor has been largely seen as the DP’s point man in the larger Gusii region which is seen to be an ODM stronghold.
