  • In a country where the top ten slots are seen as a reserve of prestigious national schools such as Alliance, Mangu, and Starehe – 2020 KCSE results were a welcome break from tradition.

The top student came from Muranga High School while the second-best student emerged from Agoro Sare High School – giving journalists a hard time to pronounce or even locate the upcountry school.

With no prestige, fame or glory, Agoro Sare High School may not be considered a top tier school but the little-known school beat respected national schools to produce Kenya’s second-best students, Wasonga Allan Udoma, who scored 87.173 points.

Agoro Sare High School is located in a small town called Oyugis in Rachuonyo Sub-County, Homa Bay County.

The boys school was established in 1958, and has risen to the status of an extra-county school with a population of over 1,000 students.

In 2019, Agoro Sare made its mark with over a quarter of the students posting results of B+ and above. 10 students had straight A’s and 75 had A minus.

The school principal attributed the success of the school to “proper teamwork and coordination between teachers and students.â€

Since 2018, the school has attained and maintained an impressive mean score of at least eight points. Its consistency over the years has seen the schools gradual improvements.

Former Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero is an alumni for the school where he did his O levels before proceeding to Mangu High School for his A levels. The late veteran journalist Juma Aluoch is also an old boy at Agoro Sare.

Cabinet Secretary Education, Prof. George Magoha termed the school as a non-entity yet it produced top student.

“The second one is from a non-entity called Agoro Sare which is somewhere, the mean 87.173, the name is Wesonga Allan Udoma”

He highlighted students whose KCSE performance improved despite failing in KCPE. Cheruyiot Dennis,190 KCPE got B-, Maluti Tom ,199 KCPE got B-,Kiptis Charity, 151 KCPE got C+.

Standing by their motto “Labour To Successâ€,the school is changing the status quo.
