  • One of Kenya’s oldest football clubs, AFC Leopards alias Ingwe, is set to have some of its assets auctioned over a Ksh 2.6 million debt owed to it’s former Belgian coach.

The High Court on October 7, gave ex-coach, Ivan Minnaert. the greenlight to enforce the arbitral award. This gave him the authority to engage auctioneers whom he asked to attach the properties of the club

“It is hereby ordered the arbitral award is hereby adopted as a decree of this court,” reads an excerpt from Justice Onesmus Mutua’s ruling.

On November 15, 2016, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) directed AFC Leopards to pay its former coach his dues.

AFC was to make the payment in Ksh 500,000 installments, but only managed to disburse the first installment.

This prompted Minnaert to engage the Employment and Labour Relations Court in pursuit of the amount owed.

The Belgian coach had been brought on board in February 2016 to steady the ship and aid the club in restoring its former glory by winning titles.

However, despite signing a 2-year contract, he was shown the door just 8 months into his tenure following a run of poor results.

“We have terminated his services to the club with immediate effect. If you can remember when Minnaert came in, we were in position two and know we are in tenth. We are out of GOtv Shield and Top 8 so as we are speaking, we are not sure whether we are going for relegation or we will survive,†read a statement issued by the club at the time.

Meanwhile, the Belgian tactician says he does not regret his tenure at Ingwe and picks out his side’s 1-0 derby win over arch-rivals Gor Mahia as his best moment at the den.

Before joining Leopards, Ivan cut short his four months stint at Rayon Sports for talks with AFC’s top hierarchy that ultimately turned out successful.

Following his sudden departure, he challenged the club to find more sustainable ways of being competitive, key among them being the establishment of a vibrant youth structure as well as reducing the turnover of players in the team.

Minnaert has previously managed various clubs including: Mali’s Djoliba AC, VB Addu FC, a professional Maldivian football club based in Malé, Maldives and Club Deportivo San Roque U19 in Spain.
