In a statement, Kevin Otiende, who is a close family member and was involved in the child’s treatment, noted that Baby Ethan could now attend school and take meals with minimal assistance.
He further revealed that when the accident happened in 2018, the child suffered as many as 40 seizures a day pushing his bill to over Ksh5 million.
Otiende disclosed that the boy’s mother was distraught when he approached him in 2019.
“Yesterday evening I had the immeasurable pleasure of meeting this boy for the second time. I call him the Miracle Boy. His name is Ethan Macharia. Three years ago, while playing, he fell from the first floor of their building head first, damaging his head badly.
“He was 3 at the time and would develop up to 40 violent seizures per day after that accident. His Mum came to my office in November of 2019, a year after the accident, and we tried everything to raise the Ksh 5 million required for him to have special surgery in India,” he stated.
He noted that when they hit a wall, the opted to pen a letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta who sent them a Ksh5 million cheque on the same day.
“One day, we wrote a letter to President Kenyatta, and he literally cleared the boy’s bill on the same day he got the letter. The surgery was successful. He now has a special device implanted in his heart that stops the attacks.
“I was thrilled to find him healthy, doing his homework, before we shared a meal. His life is now fully back to normal,” added Otiende.
In February 2020, Macharia and his mother Veronica Njeri had been stuck in India for weeks and unable to pay the boy’s surgery that he was set to undergo.
In the letter, the five-year-old appealed to the president and other Kenyans of goodwill to help him raise the money to enable him undergo surgery for a brain injury.
Later that day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Macharia, who was admitted at Forties Hospital in India, would now undergo a specialised operation after Kenyatta’s intervention.
The young boy aspires to be a footballer.
