The incident occurred at around 7 a.m in the morning as the workers started construction works for the Narok town sewerage project.
Speaking to kenyagist.com, Stanley Mbugua a journalist based in Narok confirmed the incident revealing that some of the workers had been rescued.
“The five workers were trapped inside a trench in Narok town on Tuesday morning, some have been rescued and taken to Narok Referral Hospital.
“The five workers were working for a Chinese company that had been contracted to build a sewer line. The police, workers and the Chinese were involved in the rescue operations,” said Mbugua.
He added that the incident was confirmed by Narok North deputy police commander Fredrick Syundu who urged the workers to exercise caution after the incident.
The project is part of the Kenya towns sustainable water supply and sanitation program funded by a bank and the national government.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the project had stalled after it commenced last year and is estimated to cost around Ksh.1.7 Billion.
The project which is being implemented through the Rift Valley Water Services Board (RVWSB) will cover 11.3 kilometres and will serve 13 estates in the town.
The lack of a sewerage system in the town that has an estimated population of 60,000 forced real estate owners to use septic tanks for disposal of solid human waste.
The move caused a rise in housing prices in the town as real estate owners hired exhausters to siphon the waste from the septic tanks.
