This comes barely two days after 11 people were injured in a road accident at Suswa, Narok-Mai Mahiu Road.

Another five individuals were confirmed dead and six others critically injured following an accident that occurred on Thursday morning, July  8.

Witnesses narrated that three individuals died on the spot while two others passed on as they were being ferried to a hospital. Three of those who succumbed are men while two are women.

The morning accident involved a lorry and two 14-seater matatus, with witnesses alleging it was caused by poor visibility due to the foggy weather.

One of the vans reportedly had school children who all escaped unscathed. Lari Police boss Stephen Kirui confirmed the accident and urged motorists to be extremely careful when plying along the route due to the foggy weather.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that more than 75 per cent of road traffic casualties are economically productive young adults.

Unfortunately, buses and matatus are the vehicles most frequently involved in fatal crashes.

A report issued by NTSA on November 16, 2020, indicted that Nairobi was the most dangerous county to drive in based on the statistics on road accidents for the financial year 2019/2020.

Road accidents in Nairobi alone claimed 433 in 2019/2020 as compared to 439 in 2018/2019. Nairobi was followed by Kiambu which recorded 311 deaths, an increase from the previous year’s 290.
