39 others were reportedly injured and rushed to Kakamega County Referral Hospital, following the tragic incident that happened after the final bell rang out.
Kakamega Central police commander David Kabena confirmed the incident, adding that 20Â students had since been discharged, KTN News reported.
Local residents and parents were inconsolable once the news broke, with initial reports stating that the students were trumped on a section of the staircase at one of the buildings.
Some of the witnesses at the scene of the dreadful stampede claimed that some of the students fell from the third floor of the building as they ran out of class.
Panic filled the air as brave residents rushed to the school to help ferry the injured to the hospital.
The cause of the stampede is yet to be established, with initial reports claiming that the students burst out of the classrooms as soon as the final bell rang.
Education CS George Magoha has sent a message of condolences to families, relatives & friends of the pupils who lost their lives, with his PSÂ Belio Kipsang reportedly on his way to the site.
ODM Party leader Raila Odinga sent a condolence message through his twitter page, describing it as unfortunate and regrettable.
“I wish a quick recovery to the injured children and pray that God grant strength to the affected families,” he tweeted.
The school has over 3,000 students with the headteacher, Dickson Wanyangu reportedly absent from the school at the time of the tragic accident.
