  • With the form one admission date coming to a close on Monday, February 13, Petronila Mbinda will be delighted to join form one after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna committed to financing her education following her father’s plea.

While appearing on Citizen TV on Saturday, February 12, the student’s father, Kennedy Mbinda, appealed to the government to help the family.

Touched by his plight, Sifuna affirmed that he would assist Mbinda in furthering her education via a statement just minutes following the broadcast.

“I will assist this student. Let her visit my office at Kenya International Convention Center (KICC) on Monday, room 301,” read the statement.

Mbinda, the top-performing student in Embakasi South with 418 marks, was yet to join St. Theresa Girls in Mbooni.

Kennedy had noted that he was incapable of raising the required school fees and contemplated having her repeat her class.

“I am not able to afford the fees for the school she has been called for admission. I am worried that if she repeats her class, she might not get the same results as she will be heartbroken for missing out,” Petronila’s father decried.

Speaking to the press, the student noted that she aspired to pursue her education to become a journalist and listed Lulu Hassan as her role model.

“I really want to study but I foresee myself repeating class as the deadline for admission is on Monday, February 13. I want to be a journalist like Lulu Hassan,” she stated.

Petronila’s plight also concerned her primary school headteacher Felix Mutisya who opined that all her hard work may go unrewarded.

“When a child performs as she has, especially in this kind of environment, and fails to join a good school, those behind her will be demotivated to work hard,” he lamented.

The same fate befell a 14-year-old boy from Kitengela town, Kajiado East sub-county who resorted to hawking mangoes after failing to join Form One despite scoring 417 marks.

Eric Mumo Sila was to join Oloolaiser High School in Ongata Rongai township, the only national school in the vast Kajiado County.

He was required to present himself to school for admission on February 6 but he is yet to report because of his family’s abject poverty.
