  • Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja, announced free transport for school children in the county.

The governor issued the directive in a meeting with Nairobi matatu operators at City Hall on Friday, November 18.

Sakaja, however, stated that the school-going children will only enjoy the service when they wear school uniform.

While announcing the move, Sakaja revealed that he was in talks with traffic police to ensure students and matatus were not arrested for carrying excess passengers.

The directive will benefit thousands of children in the county who commute daily to school sometimes in unfavourable conditions.

Sakaja, nonetheless, did not announce when the new directive will commence.

He also did not disclose whether the county government or taxpayers will foot the bill or if the matatus would offer the service for free.

The new directive from Sakaja was part of his campaign manifesto, where he promised to also introduce school feeding programs.

While the feeding program was to benefit public schools, the transport reprieve will benefit all students both in public and private schools.

Sakaja is also set to establish 17 centers for children with special needs across the county

The governor further seeks to enforce a law requiring all residential areas in the city to have playing grounds for children.
