Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe spent the better part of his speech on Saturday, April 4 urging the youth to join the fight against Covid-19 owing to their huge impact in various sectors.

Just before delivering his update on the number of positive cases in the country, Kagwe urged the youth to be on the forefront in fighting the pandemic.

Kagwe made a rallying call to the youth to protect the older generation, “As others have done in the past, I appeal to you to really take the responsibility as seriously as the generations that were there with our forefathers.

“If we do not do this it is also you the youth who will suffer the most, it is you my sons and daughters who will face your children with no jobs and a collapsed economy.

“It is you who will face us your parents as you watch us get sickly and there is nothing you’ll be able to do and worse still, you who will bury us. Not in small numbers but in very large numbers.

“Is that something that you’d like to do? If not then the road ahead is clear, we have got observe and be part of the solution to the problem.”

Youth form the largest chunk of Kenya’s population with Kagwe making an appeal to the group who have made an impact in the country since fighting for its independence.

He went on to reveal how the youth have brought some sanity in the matatu, boda boda and tuk tuk industries as well as sports.

Kagwe opened up on why he addressed the youth, “Today I would like to make a special appeal and address a special group of people who are the youth of our nation, the youth are the biggest component of our society.

“The youth are also the people who are largely mobile, the youth are also the people who have got the energy and I wish to appeal for the unleashing of this energy to fighting the virus.”

According to statistics from the 2019 Census, more than 75% of Kenya’s population is under the age of 35 and make up more than 35 million.

In the briefing Kagwe announced four more cases bringing the total number of those tested positive for Covid-19 in the country to 126.
