  • Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have pinpointed the Jubilee Insurance Centre building as the likely spot used by the mysterious sniper to shoot National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) employee Mary Lilian Waithera.

Reports indicated that the detectives also retrieved the records of those who accessed the building on that fateful day in a bid to unravel the puzzle.

In addition, the detectives recorded statements from security guards of nearby buildings as they seek to unearth truth behind the shooting that occurred on Monday along Kaunda street, within the Nairobi Central Business District.

According to the autopsy, the bullet that penetrated Waithera’s body was shot from an elevated angle, possibly from a nearby building.

Detectives are pursuing every lead in a bid establish whether it was a targeted execution or a stray bullet.

Paul Mbogo, Waithera’s husband, affirmed that his wife was not working on anything that might have put her life in danger.

While speaking on Saturday, February 18, outside their Nairobi home, Mbogo noted that they shared a perfect relationship whereby they did not hide things from each other.

“She was not a witness of anything. Mary never hid anything from me. Even when she sneezed during the day, when we met in the evening she would tell me.”

“I don’t want to say what the government is doing or not doing. That is not even near me. What I know; we were robbed. We were robbed of our love,” he added.

Waithera left behind two sons; a Grade Four and Form Three student.

According to CCTV footage capturing the incident, Waithera was walking with a colleague before she suddenly collapsed; causing confusion as there was no gunshot heard.

“A lady came to our door and said that someone had been shot and that we should call an ambulance for her. We all panicked and ran outside to see what happened,” a shopkeeper on the street stated.

An Ambulance arrived 20 minutes later and took approximately 11 minutes to attend to the NHIF employee before she was rushed to the hospital.

Waithera was pronounced dead on arrival.
